Trying to escape his oppressive reality through his dreams Lucas, a young man, navigates between a domineering mother and a sister who reclaims the kidney she donated to him as a child. The family’s interactions are explosively funny and heartfelt, and the ending will leave audiences breathless. One of Argentina’s leading contemporary playwrights, Spregelburd’s language takes us to the most absurd places as if they were the most natural. “Like the best of Alain Robbe-Grillet, Spregelburd’s writing,” states Carrasquillo, “is ‘phenomenological.” Using repetitions that are methodical and geometric, Spregelburd reveals the inner self of the characters. In the repetition of moments, the ruptures in those reoccurring incidents, and the attention to odd details, Spregelburd’s approach resembles the experience of psychoanalysis that he cleverly spoofs in Lúcido.” Rafael Spregelburd is a playwright, director, actor, and translator who lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He has written approximately 40 plays, including La modestia, La estupidez, El pánico, La extravagancia, Fractal, Un momento argentino, La escala humana, and Bizarra. Spregelburd’s plays have been translated into German, English, French, Italian, Dutch, Swedish, Portuguese, and Czech. In 1994, he founded El Patrón Vázquez Theater Company, which has appeared in festivals in Mexico, Brazil, Spain, Germany, England, Portugal, Colombia, Uruguay, and Venezuela. He has been playwright-in-reside Lúcido will feature GALA company members Lucrecia Basualdo (Teté), who last appeared in La edad de la ciruela, and Carlos Castillo (Darío), who last appeared in the critically acclaimed El mejor alcalde, el rey. Making their first appearance at GALA are Anabel Marcano (Lucrecia), who was most recently seen in Mujeres al poder and Rosa de dos aromas at Teatro de la Luna, and Peter Pereyra (Lucas), a company member of Teatro de la Luna, who recently appeared in Fucking A at the Studio Theatre SecondStage. José Carrasquillo is entering his third decade of directing for regional theaters. At GALA, he directed The True History of Coca Cola in Mexico, Cita a ciegas, El arquitecto y el emperador de Asiria, La granada, and Chaos Organized. Other credits include Macbeth and Medea at Washington Shakespeare Theatre, Jesus Hopped the “A” Train at Round House Theatre, Donna Q at Signature Theatre, A Language of Their Own at Studio Theatre SecondStage, Sueño at Olney Theatre, The Obituary Bowl at Woolly Mammoth, and The Magic Rainforest at the Kennedy Center. He also directed José Rivera’s Marisol at the Clarice Smith Performance Arts Center. Mr. Carrasquillo was the founding Artistic Director of Freedom Stage in Washington, DC, served as Artistic Director at The Group Theatre in Seattle, and is a regular guest lecturer and director at universities and conservatories.
